Understanding the Main Tests for Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects how a person communicates and interacts with others. Diagnosing autism involves several key tests. Let's break down the four main ones in simple terms.

What is it?

A quick check to see if a child is learning basic skills on time.

How does it work?

Doctors ask parents about their child's development and may observe the child playing and interacting.

Why is it important?

It helps identify early signs of developmental delays.

  • Calm Area: Designate a quiet, calming area where your child can go to relax. Fill it with their favorite soft toys, pillows, and blankets.

  • Lighting: Use soft, natural lighting as much as possible. Avoid harsh fluorescent lights, which can be overstimulating.

  • Noise Control: Minimize loud noises. Use carpets, curtains, and cushions to help absorb sound. Consider noise-canceling headphones if your child is very sensitive to sound.

What is Occupational Therapy (OT)?

1. Developmental Screening

2. Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation

What is it?

A detailed assessment if the screening suggests autism.

How does it work?

Specialists observe the child, ask detailed questions, and use tests to assess behavior, language, and development.

Why is it important?

It provides a clear picture of the child’s strengths and challenges.

3. Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS)

What is it?

A series of structured tasks to observe behaviors linked to autism.

How does it work?

The child participates in activities with an examiner who notes their social and communication skills.

Why is it important?

It offers specific insights into key areas affected by autism.

4. Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R)

What is it?

A detailed interview with parents about the child's development.

How does it work?

Parents answer questions about the child's communication, social interactions, and behaviors.

Why is it important?

It gathers a comprehensive history essential for diagnosis.
